Soft pastels are one of the earliest portable mediums. They are pure pigment mixed with binder to create Artist quality chalk like sticks. Loved by the impressionists such as Monet and Degas, soft pastels can easily  be mistaken for oil paintings. They are lightfast and will retain their vivid colours for generations.
